A family homestead in the Missouri Ozarks.

We're Joe and Melissa, building Gnomestead Farms near Ellington, Missouri — one season at a time.

Our Story

We're Joe and Melissa, and Gnomestead Farms is our family homestead near Ellington, Missouri. We're building it one season at a time through hard work, steady learning, and a growing connection to the land, the animals, and the life we want to create here in the Ozarks.

Joe's grandfather farmed this kind of country a generation ago, and there's something grounding about coming back to it. We're putting in fences, raising animals, working the land, and figuring out what it really means to live close to it. Some days that looks like progress you can photograph. Other days it's a fence post and a lesson learned.

This is the honest version of the journey — the work, the wins, and the seasons in between. Slow progress is still progress, and we're glad to share it.

What We're Building

Homestead Life

A family home rooted in the land — built with our hands, on our own timeline, for the long haul.

Animals & Land

Caring for chickens, ducks, rabbits, and goats while improving the pastures, woods, and water around us. Stewardship over shortcuts.

Learning as We Go

Every season teaches us something new. We're picking up the skills a homestead asks for, one project at a time.

Sharing the Journey

The honest story of building a homestead from the ground up — for family, friends, and anyone who wants to follow along.

Right Now at Gnomestead Farms

Here's what the homestead looks like in this season — the animals in our care, the projects in motion, and what we're focused on next.

In Our Care

  • Chickens for eggs and good company
  • Ducks splashing through the day
  • Rabbits in the hutches
  • Goats keeping us on our toes

On the Land

  • Improving pastures and clearing brush
  • Fences, gates, and shelters going in
  • Water, drainage, and access roads
  • Working with the woods, not against them

What We're Focused On

  • Building daily routines that hold up
  • Setting up systems for chores and care
  • Learning the skills each season asks for
  • Showing up, day after day
